The time of your birth will tell you your rising sign. The time of birth plus your rising will set up your entire birth chart. This article is about the importance of knowing your rising sign ruling planet, which is the planet associated (or paired) with the sign rising that is coming over the horizon at the moment of birth. You’ll need a basic understanding of what the rising sign describes. If you don't have that I suggest you look at Cafe Astrology to learn more.
Each zodiac sign gets the majority of its qualities from its ruling planet. For example, Libra is ruled by Venus. When Libra is rising at the time of birth Venus has rulership over the entire chart. This person’s chart will have a Venus perspective on life, events will be viewed from a Venusian point of view. Their perspective will likely be focused on relationships and socializing. In addition, you can look at what sign this person’s Venus is located in in the chart, it describes their life outlook as well. Any current planetary transits in the sky to this person’s Venus will be felt personally by the chart owner. You could say this Venus in this chart is sensitive.
These are the ruling planes for each of the signs.
Aries - Mars Libra - Venus
Taurus - Venus Scorpio - Mars
Gemini - Mercury Sagittarius - Jupiter
Cancer - Moon Capricorn - Saturn
Leo - Sun Aquarius - Saturn
Virgo - Mercury Pisces - Jupiter
I use the traditional rulerships therefore you won’t see Uranus, Neptune or Pluto assigned as rulers. All of the above assigned planets plus the Sun and Moon are visible to the naked eye, they are going be more personal to an individual when considering rising sign qualities. You can add an additional influence of the non-visible planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) if you want. I don’t think these non-visible planets fully express the qualities of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio compared to the visible planets.
So what is the importance of paying attention to your rising sign ruling planet? If you think about the first thing anyone asks regarding astrology -
“What does that mean for me?” or “ How does that affect me?” The only reason anyone studies astrology is because they want to know what is going to happen them. Such as “When will things get better?” “When will this [fill in the blank] be over?” The better you understand your rising sign and therefore your birth chart’s ruling planet the better you will understand how current planetary alignments will affect you, personally. In the Libra rising sign example having Saturn conjunct or join up in the current year with Venus is a very different experience compared to having Jupiter join up Venus. The first would bring new relationship limits and fewer friends to socialize with compared to the Jupiter experience of more social opportunities than usual.
Your rising sign, its ruling planet, and any planets in the first house are the most personal areas of the birth chart. Understand this and you’ll understand how life affects you, any good or bad parts of life. All these factors have dominion over your physical body and you as an individual. If a slow moving planet starts transiting one of these important factors you are going to feel it in your day to life for several months. You are going to feel it emotionally, mentally and physically. For example, if Jupiter joins up with your rising sign ruling planet you are very likely to feel more optimistic and willing to look at the the bigger picture of life. You may even create some grand plans. Same thing if Jupiter joins your exact rising sign degree or if Jupiter travels through your first house. This hypothetical Jupiter transit will be felt by you personally.
Taking astrology a step further, an advanced step further, you can look at timing techniques such as Profection. In this technique each year of life after the moment you are born one house of the birth chart gets activated. In the first year of life the first house is activated and then every 12 years it will be activated. The second year of life the 2nd house is activated and so on. In each of these years (0, 12, 24, 36 etc) transiting planets to your first house AND to your rising sign ruler will be stronger, they will have more impact, they will be felt more personally.
I hope I have laid out enough reasons to view the rising sign ruler as important. Taking the time to learn about this planet and how it imbues its associated signs will give you so much information about yourself, your family and your friends’ charts. Looking ahead to see coming planetary transits to a chart’s rising sign ruling planet will help you plan and feel ready for personal events. You will be able to see when a “good” event is coming or when a “bad” event will be over. You will be feel empowered.
